ATS-friendly CV: how to pass automated filters

An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is the software companies and job portals use to receive, sort and filter applications. When you apply to a large company, an ATS most likely reads your CV first: it extracts the text, organises it into fields (experience, education, skills) and compares it with the job.

In most cases it doesn't “reject” CVs on its own, but it does rank them: if your CV doesn't parse well or lacks the job's terms, it ends up at the bottom of the list, where no one looks.

Real text, single columns, standard headings, consistent dates and plain formatting ensure an ATS-friendly CV.

• Real text, not images: a PDF exported from an editor (not scanned).
• A single column, or at least a clear reading order.
• Standard section titles: “Experience”, “Education”, “Skills”.
• Consistent dates in the same format (month and year).
• No complex tables, text boxes or key information in headers and footers.
• No icons in place of words (a phone icon isn't the word “Phone”).

The ATS compares your CV with the job. So use the same terms for what you genuinely can do: the job title, tools, certifications and skills that appear in the posting.

Careful: keywords yes, stuffing no. Adding terms you don't master may get you past the filter but will sink you in the interview. And recruiters instantly spot keyword lists with no context.

Plain text tests, keyword comparisons and file naming are key steps to check your CV.

1. 1Open your PDF, select all the text and paste it into a plain text editor. If it comes out jumbled or parts are missing, an ATS will have the same problem.
2. 2Compare the job with your CV: do the top 5–10 requirements appear in the same words (where you meet them)?
3. 3Check that the file name and your CV headline include the role you're applying for.
