How to tailor your resume to a job with ChatGPT (without it inventing anything)

A prompt that works, the real risks (invented facts and privacy) and a checklist to verify every line before you apply.

What an AI can do for your resume (and what it cannot)

An assistant like ChatGPT is useful for three things: reading a job posting and pulling out what it asks for, proposing new wording for what you have already done and ordering the content by what matters most to that role.

It knows nothing about you that you have not told it, and it tends to fill gaps with details that sound good. Use it as a writer you correct, not as the one who decides what goes in.

Before you paste anything: privacy

  • Remove what is not needed: ID numbers, your full home address, your date of birth and other people's details.
  • Check the settings of the service to see whether your conversations are stored or used to train models.
  • Do not paste documents that are not yours, such as a colleague's resume, or confidential company information.

How to ask: from “improve my resume” to a prompt that works

Weak

“Improve my resume for this job.”

Strong

“Here is my resume and a job posting. Do three things: 1) list the key requirements in the posting; 2) tell me which ones my resume covers and which it does not; 3) propose new wording for my summary and for the bullets of my last job that uses the posting's terms, without adding any fact, number, date or tool that is not in my resume. If information is missing, ask me.”

The last condition is the important one: ask it not to invent and to ask you when something is missing. Afterwards you can ask for short alternatives, such as “give me two shorter versions of the summary”.

Check every line: the risk of invention

Generative AI can invent without warning: a master's degree you do not have, a suspiciously round number, a tool you never used. A recruiter will spot it in the interview and it is hard to explain away.

  • Dates, titles and employers: compare them with your original resume.
  • Numbers and percentages: if they do not come from you, remove them or put in the real figure.
  • Tools and degrees: delete anything you cannot defend.
  • Inflated verbs: “led” where you only took part changes the meaning.
  • Tone: it should sound like you; if you would not say it in an interview, do not write it.

The posting's words: use them well

Repeating the words of the posting helps filters and readers, as long as they describe something you have done. If they ask for “vendor management” and you negotiated with vendors, write it that way. What you must not do is hide keywords in invisible text: many systems detect it and recruiters see it as deception.

What a general-purpose AI does not solve

  • Layout: it gives you text back, and you have to put it into a template again.
  • Consistency between versions: every posting produces another version you must keep and sort.
  • Verification: nobody checks for you that each sentence is backed by your resume.

The FastCV AI tailoring tool is built for that: it reads the posting, lists its requirements, shows which ones your resume covers, rewrites only with the information you supplied and discards rewrites that would add unsupported details. It works on your template and you can download the result as a PDF or in Word.

Step by step

  1. 1Prepare your base resume, complete and reviewed, with real dates and numbers.
  2. 2Copy the whole posting and paste it next to your resume (without sensitive personal data).
  3. 3Ask for the analysis first: the requirements and what is missing, before any rewriting.
  4. 4Ask for the new wording with the condition not to invent, and review it line by line.
  5. 5Move it into a clean template and download it as a PDF.
  6. 6Check the result with Review my resume before you apply and prepare for the interview with Interview prep.
