Cashier CV example

A store needs someone fast on the till, accurate with money and calm when the line grows. This example shows all three with real numbers.

Template: Modern · Fictional example: names, companies and details are made up to illustrate the format.

Tips for this CV

  1. 1Share your pace: customers per shift and tills that balance show speed and accuracy.
  2. 2Name the EPOS systems and payment types you handle (card, cash, gift cards, mobile pay).
  3. 3If you worked through busy seasons, say so: it shows you can take the volume.
  4. 4State your availability: rotating shifts, weekends and bank holidays.

What recruiters look for in a Cashier CV

  • POS and scanner experience, payment types, store size and pace at peak hours.
  • Honesty and accuracy: balanced tills, cash handling and returns.
  • Availability for shifts and holidays, and a friendly manner with customers.

Common mistakes on a Cashier CV

  • Saying only "customer service" without mentioning the till, the pace or the type of store.
  • Not stating weekend and holiday availability, which is standard in the industry.
  • Leaving out languages or busy-season experience, which help in tourist areas.

Cashier interview questions (and how to answer them)

The questions that come up most in interviews for this role, and what the interviewer is really checking.

  1. 1

How do you handle a long line of impatient customers?

They look at your calm and your pace. Explain that you stay friendly, ring up quickly without losing accuracy and ask for help opening another register if the wait grows.

  2. 2

What do you do if your till is short at the end of the shift?

They measure honesty and method. Say you recount calmly, review the latest transactions and returns, tell your supervisor and leave a written note rather than covering the difference.

  3. 3

A customer disputes a price on the till. How do you handle it?

They want to see judgment. Check the price in the system or on the shelf, explain politely what it shows and, if a label is wrong, call a supervisor to fix it rather than deciding yourself.

  4. 4

How do you spot a counterfeit bill or a suspicious payment?

They look for attention to detail. Mention checking the security features, using the detector pen or scanner if there is one and calling a supervisor with any doubt, without accusing the customer.

  5. 5

Are you available on weekends and bank holidays?

The industry requires it. Answer plainly: "I can work rotating shifts, weekends and bank holidays with advance notice of the schedule."

  6. 6

Tell me about yourself and your cashier experience.

Summarise years, type of store and one number. For example: "I have five years as a supermarket till operator, serving about 180 customers a shift with balanced tills."

Frequently asked questions

What skills should I list on a cashier CV?

Till and EPOS, balancing the till, customer service, payment types and calm at peak hours. Back them with a number such as customers per shift or balanced closeouts.

What if I have never worked a register?

Highlight any job with the public and with money (food service, sales, volunteering) and how quickly you learn systems. Add punctuality and availability, which count for a lot on the till.

Do I need any training to be a cashier?

Usually not. A customer service course or a Level 2 food safety certificate helps if you work in a store with a fresh-food department.
