Data analyst CV example
A data analyst is not judged by the tools on the list but by the decisions the work helped make. This example shows how to describe projects with impact and the right technologies.
Template: Technical · Fictional example: names, companies and details are made up to illustrate the format.
Tips for this CV
- 1Show the impact, not just the tool: which decision your analysis changed or how much time it saved.
- 2List the tools you really use every day (SQL, Power BI, Python, Excel) and avoid a long string of technologies you barely know.
- 3A portfolio or a repository with real projects carries a lot of weight, especially if you are starting out.
- 4Match the keywords to each posting: some ask for Tableau or Looker, others for dbt or advanced Excel.
What recruiters look for in a Data Analyst CV
- Tools you use every day (SQL, Power BI or Tableau, Python or R, advanced Excel) and the data volume you handle.
- Business impact: decisions made, time saved, revenue or costs affected.
- A portfolio or verifiable projects and the ability to explain results to non-technical colleagues.
Common mistakes on a Data Analyst CV
- Listing twenty technologies with no context or level.
- Describing tasks ("built reports") without the result or how they were used.
- Including no link to projects or code, when many employers ask to see them.
Data Analyst interview questions (and how to answer them)
The questions that come up most in interviews for this role, and what the interviewer is really checking.
- 1
Tell me about an analysis of yours that changed a business decision.
It is the star question. Use problem, analysis, result: what was being asked, which data you used, what you found and what changed afterward, with a number if you can.
- 2
How do you check data quality before analysing it?
They look for rigor. Mention checking duplicates, nulls and outliers, comparing totals with another source and documenting cleaning decisions so they can be repeated.
- 3
How do you explain a technical result to a non-technical person?
They test your communication. Say you start with the conclusion and why it matters, use a simple chart and leave methodology for whoever asks.
- 4
Two data sources give different numbers. What do you do?
They measure judgment. Explain that you identify each source's definitions and filters, find where the numbers diverge, check with the owners and document which source is used and why.
- 5
How would you write a SQL query for sales by month and category?
Walk through the logic: join the sales table with products, group by month and category, sum revenue and sort, and mention how you handle duplicates and refunds.
- 6
Tell me about yourself and your analytics experience.
Summarise years, industry, tools and one result. For example: "I have four years analysing e-commerce data with SQL, Power BI and Python, and my dashboards save three days of reporting a month."
Frequently asked questions
Which tools should a data analyst CV list?
The ones you master and use often, ordered by the posting: SQL, a visualisation tool (Power BI, Tableau, Looker), Python or R and Excel. Add a level or a project that proves it.
How do I write a data analyst CV if I am just starting?
Highlight personal or course projects with real data, a GitHub repository and a clear result. A page with three well-explained projects beats a list of courses.
Should I include a portfolio link?
Yes. A link to GitHub, a notebook or a published dashboard lets the recruiter see how you work. Pick two or three projects and add a sentence of context.
